I have been working on my outside patio area and lawn for years which was finally starting to pay off and look nicer. It has been taking me a lot of time to work on it but I really enjoy getting to be outside with my plants because it helps me forget about everything else that may be going on in my life at the time. The winter months were always hard because there were many days when the cold weather would prevent me from being out with my plants like I wanted to be. I thought that if I looked into Victorian Glass Greenhouses so that I could still have plant time even during the winter months. It also occurred to me that having one in back would add a little more charm to that area especially if I planted some nice shrubs around it to make it look partly hidden.

Bed Bugs and Beyond Once considered a rare nuisance, bed bugs are ...For the first time in fifty years we are having a bed bug problem in America. One of the things that I’ve found when it comes to avoiding bed bugs is that a clean house helps solve the problem. The problem with having a cluttered house is that you leave a lot of places for bed bugs to hide in. Bed bugs just don’t shop up in your house because you’re unclean however when you give them hundreds of places to take refuge in you can end up with a large infestation. One thing that you should do when you think you have a bed bug infection is clean up the house. You’re going to be required to take care of a lot of things anyway when the exterminator shows up so you might as well get a head start on things. The sooner you get the problem taken care of the faster you can get back to your life.

When out shopping for the perfect outdoor storage bench, you should think about where you are going to put it. You should know whether you are buying it for indoors, or whether it will be for your patio or for in the garden. The outdoor wooden bench will be one that is varnished, and one that is made from hardwood will certainly give it some integrity. The varnish will protect it from getting wet. In your outside storage bench, you can store anything from your garden tools to flower pots. It also serves as an excellent place to sit and relax after a hard day’s work. If you want your bench to be on the patio, then one of the cushion benches with leather seating will be most comfortable and a good choice. You should always remember to properly maintain the upholstery of your bench, otherwise it will crack and lead to damage. There benches are fantastic; all you do is put it in a convenient spot and stuff in all the things you want stored.

How to Grow Strawberries

2012
01.03

Strawberries are delicious. More so if they are freshly picked from their plants, right? Instead of buying stored strawberries in grocery stores or the supermarket, why not try growing some on your own? If you have little backyard land area that you can utilize to plant strawberries then better. If you do not have any land space (like if you are living in the metro) try container gardening or better yet utilize an EarthBox container. So, here is how to grow strawberries. Follow these simple steps and in no time, you will have fresh, delicious strawberries ready to harvest.

Things that you will need:

  • Shears (Garden)
  • Spades (Garden)
  • Trowels (Garden)
  • Strawberry Plants
  • Shovel
  • Rototillers
  • Fertilizers
  • Compost Makers

Step 1: You cannot start your strawberry garden unless you have the strawberries. Buy disease-free plants from nurseries. Make sure that they are healthy.

Step 2: The next step is to choose a spot or an area that receives the most sun. Also, the area that you should pick must have proper drainage. For general knowledge, south facing slopes are best to best to plant strawberries. If you do not have an area that has good drainage, make do with what you have just make sure that the strawberries are planted in raised beds.

Step 3: Prepare the land for the strawberries. You have to till it to achieve a depth of 12 inches. After that, remove all the grasses and weeds that are in the tilled soil. Once done, you need to dig in the compost to the soil to add more nutrients in order to have healthier produce.

Step 4: Dig. After preparing the land, you now have to prepare the planting area for the actual strawberry plants. Dig a hole wide enough (at least 7 inches) for the plant and also make sure that the depth is enough to accommodate the roots. Put the plant in each hole and then cover it up so the roots would not show. The spacing in between plants is arbitrary. But for easier maintenance, place them 18 inches apart from each other.

Step 5: Once the plants are set, all you have to do is to maintain the cleanliness of its surroundings. Remove any grass or weed that grows in the beds as soon as they show up and also, cut off the runners as soon as you see them appear. Cutting them off will make sure that the plant can focus on bearing fruit. Also, remember that newly planted strawberries need at least an inch of water each week.

Step 5: Harvest. However, you should take note that in the first year, do not let the plant bear fruit. As soon as you see the blossoms, take them off. Doing do will ensure that the plant is still strong and will produce more fruits the next year. When picking strawberries, pick them all in the day they ripen so they are at their best.
